Wadi United - Football In Arabia
It started as a portrait project, but sometimes, the best-made plans turn awry. As I looked around I saw these enigmatic empty fields and goalposts, pitches marked out of sand and rocks. I entertained the notion of passion that would involve such a game in these conditions and of the players that came to compete here. Ten thousand kilometres through the backwaters of Arabia searching out the places, and one hundred pitches where the wadis and jebels meet. This I came to realise was a portrait of sorts, it just never had to feature the people in it, to tell their story.
